How to set, track, and carry monthly savings goals
A one-pager to keep next to your printer. Print it once, slip it into the binder with the savings pages, refer back each month.
Set a target for each goal at the start of the month
The right column shape — Goal, Target, Saved, Note — carries over to the Canva template. A monthly goal works best when the target is a single round number the household agrees on at the start of the month.
- Pick a number for the Target column — round to the nearest $50 / €50 / £50 so you can read totals at a glance.
- Write the goal name once in the left column; rename anything that no longer fits in the Canva template.
- If a goal is dormant this month, leave its Target blank. Empty rows are honest; crossed-out ones are noise.
Track saved weekly
Saved is the truth. The point of the tracker is running balance per goal, not a micro-ledger of each transfer. Most buyers fill the column once a week and let the total grow.
- Use a Sunday or payday moment as a recurring tick. Frequency beats intensity for savings.
- Write the cumulative Saved amount — not the contribution. The running total is the figure you want to watch.
- A short Note column at the right works for one line of context: "tax refund", "birthday", "transfer 18th".
Print first, then make a monthly check-in
A short monthly check-in keeps the tracker useful without making savings another daily task. Set a recurring reminder, review the numbers calmly, and carry one clear next step into the new month.
- Print this page with Cmd+P / Ctrl+P, or use the printable PDF when you want a clean copy for your binder.
- When you add to savings, record the contribution in the relevant goal row, then update its cumulative Saved amount.
- At month-end, total the contributions, compare Saved with each Target, and choose next month’s amount or focus.
Carry totals forward next month
The savings tracker earns its keep over a full year. After three months you will know which goals surprise you (an emergency you forgot about, a buffer you stopped needing) and which goals demand a bigger target next cycle.
- On the 1st of next month, open the same PDF, set a new month name, print fresh.
- Move this month's Saved into next month as the starting balance on the same goal row.
- Resave the file as a dated copy if you prefer — the file itself does not change; you just print fresh pages.
